The update changes the balance between a cleaner screen and quick access to information.
What changed
According to reports from 9to5Google and Android Authority, tapping a message used to show its metadata, while swiping left was used to reply directly. In the new setup they describe, swiping left across the chat area displays timestamps for the entire conversation, while swiping right on the message you want to answer sends a reply.
These are journalistic observations, not a Google announcement, so the new behavior may not be available to everyone yet. Google’s official help page describes replying with a left-to-right swipe, but doesn’t discuss the latest change or explain how to show timestamps.
A cleaner screen, a less obvious feature
The new gesture lets you see timestamps for several messages at once, rather than opening the metadata for each one individually. This could be more convenient when you need to quickly reconstruct the sequence of a conversation. But information that previously appeared when you tapped a message is now, according to the reports, accessed with a swipe and doesn’t remain on screen.
This trade-off is an inference about the possible effect of the design, not a goal confirmed by Google. Hiding timestamps doesn’t mean they’ve been removed: the reports describe a way to show them temporarily in a conversation. According to the outlets’ observations, you can also open an individual message’s details separately, although the exact behavior may vary by interface version.
In a discussion on Reddit, some participants say they didn’t find the timestamps right away; others prefer the less cluttered screen. These are individual impressions, not a representative survey, so they don’t show how widespread frustration or confusion is.
The rollout is still uneven
As of September 26, outlets described the update as rolling out widely, but noted that it hadn’t appeared for everyone at the same time. There are no figures on what share of users have received it, and Google hasn’t explained why it is changing the gestures. So the described setup may not have appeared on some phones yet.
It’s easy to check over the next few days: try swiping left across the conversation area. If the gesture doesn’t show timestamps yet, that alone doesn’t prove the feature has been removed or that the app isn’t working properly.
